S01E03 - Habit Building

Home Discovery (absorb, then RECALL)

Ryder Carroll - How to Declutter Your Mind (12m) -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=ym6OYelD5fA
Ryder designed the bullet journaling system, which I think is absolutely brilliant. I don't do this exactly, but I think it's an excellent method and I have incorporated some of its principles into my journals.

The Importance of Deep Work (2300 words, 12m) -  https://azeria-labs.com/the-importance-of-deep-work-the-30-hour-method-for-learning-a-new-skill/
Final great article by Azeria; really breaks down why deep work is essential for mastering a skill you don't have yet, and to know whether you like parts of it or not. Either way, you learn something and it becomes another tool in your mental infosec arsenal.

Breathing Techniques - Anxiety & Stress Management (1h 9m)  -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Le3uo8lckk
What a wonderful teacher. He is so fun to listen to, and he really drives home the point about how learning deep breathing can help you in your everyday life.

Research Projects

(PROJECT) - Start Using a Calendar!

There’s lots of articles on the internet out there, but you’re going to have to figure the systems that work for you. Some like blocking ALL of their time, some like a sparse calendar with only things that need reminding, some like nebulous blocks that have a thematic intention for the block of space. Try digital, try paper, try a combination!

(PROJECT) - Start a New Habit!

We’ve talked a lot in class about various habits that might help us. Daily or more regular activity to help us learn, or maybe something as simple as starting to floss! Deep breathing, exercise, or meditation practice will cause lots of cascading changes in your life, it might be worth trying to insert that routine in response to one of your cues.

(PROJECT) - Track Your Goals!

Feedback about your progress is going to help you make better decisions, as well as give your brain some time to focus on ingredients that you want to stew in your brain soup. Planning ahead, tracking completion, then reviewing weekly goals will give your brain a useful feedback loop. I use Zapier to send myself emails at the end of the week to review my progress!

S01E02 - Learning to Learn

Home Discovery (absorb, then RECALL)

How to Remember Everything You Learn (13m) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-UvSKe8jW4
A great distillation of Barbara Oakley’s Learning to Learn class where I learned a lot of this material myself, in a very well produced video. Great content creator!

Hacking Passion (24m) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHLTltK1kss
A really great talk utilizing some powerful photos to talk about how passion is something we can decide upon and foster ourselves.

The Process of Mastering a Skill (17m, ~3300 words)  - https://azeria-labs.com/the-process-of-mastering-a-skill/
Another excellent article from Azeria breaking down the stages of learning you’ll experience, what to expect, and some excellent techniques.

Research Projects

(CLASS) - Learning How to Learn

This is Barbara Oakley’s class I learned most of this episode’s content from. It’s absolutely excellent, and she is a goofy, lovable teacher.

(BOOK) - Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life

This workbook helps you utilize methods from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to observe, reflect upon, and change your narrative about yourself. I found ACT more helpful than traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and even Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

(APP) - Anki

We talked about spaced repetition during class and this app is great for starting your own set of flashcards. I highly recommend making your own! This is the best way to study and recall concepts you’ll need to know for your A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications.

S01E01 - Cybersecurity Career Skills

Home Discovery

Jobs in Cybersecurity (20m, ~3800 words) - https://cybersecurityventures.com/jobs/
A deep dive into the realities of how many jobs are open in this industry.

The Paradox of Choice (13m, ~2500 words) - https://azeria-labs.com/paradox-of-choice/
Absolutely excellent article about how difficult it can be to begin learning when there are so many options available, and SO MUCH INFORMATION.

Y'all Can Start an Infosec Career. Yeah, YOU. (12m, ~2400 words) - https://www.7thdrxn.com/blag/learn-infosec
My syllabus outlining what we've talked about as the 3 keys to really ingesting and understanding infosec.

Research Project

(PROJECT) Career Research

Google for articles, tweets, or blogs about jobs that sound interesting to you; after you read an article, spend a minute to RECALL what was discussed, then build an outline of main points you remember. Afterward, take a gander at your source material and fill in key points with your own words.

(PROJECT) INFOSEC RESEARCH

Listen to the recent episode of a security podcast like Smashing Security or Defensive Security and spend a minute to RECALL what was discussed; it may be worth pausing halfway through to get things out. Write down things they talked about, especially things you don’t understand very well. Google for articles about them and perform the first exercise.
